If the name James and Jamesy sounds familiar, it means you either caught or missed their sold out show James and Jamesy in the Dark at the Fringe Festival last year. Luckily for you, the uproariously funny duo is back at the Waterfront Theatre in Vancouver for 9 short days!
Aaron Malkin and Alastair Knowles, who make up the British duo James and Jamesy, have each a list of accolades to their names. Aaron Malkin is the founder of Vancouver’s PlayLaughBe Festival and the clown troupe Poupon Parade. He also works as the marketing director of Vancouver’s In Jest Festival of Clown and Play. Alastair Knowles is Treasurer and Principle Performer for Vancouver’s critically acclaimed Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret and Co-Produces Vancouver’s In Jest Festival of Clown and Play. Together they create an incredibly innocent yet hysterical performance of two men on a stage in the dark.
The concept of James and Jamesy in the Dark, I will admit, was difficult at first to comprehend. I thought to myself, “Two men talking to each other in the dark?”. And yet words cannot describe how completely wrong I was. Let’s set the stage. James first appears in a dark suit with a white face and a lamp attached to his head. Jamesy, appears seconds later with the same white painted face, suit, and lamp. Then they meet and confusion ensues as each of the James discovers humankind for the first time.
It’s a journey of self discovery and existentialism wrapped up in riotously funny dialogue. They ask the unanswerable questions “What are you?” and “Why are we here?” and the audience is swept up in their quest to answer them. I was in the Waterfront Theatre for an hour and a half and I have to say I have never seen a show quite like this. Aaron and Alastair managed in an hour and a half to capture the attention and hearts of every single person in the audience through this fun, interactive, new experience. We were silent, we were laughing, we were participating but most of all we were sad to see them go!
James and Jamesy in the Dark is unlike any show I’ve every seen. And the rest of Canada agrees! The absolutely brilliant duo of James and Jamesy in the Dark is nominated for a Canadian Comedians Award for Best Live Ensemble, you can vote for them here, and has sold more than 40,000 tickets since 2014. James and Jamesy in the Dark is playing at the Waterfront Theatre in Graville Island until October 18. Don’t miss out on one of the funniest shows this season! Buy your tickets at here!
