Recently, I was fortunate enough to speak with Cassandra Varteresian D.O.M.P (CEO-Qc) / R.M.T, Manual Osteopathic Practitioner and Registered Massage Therapist at  In Sync Natural Health.

Cassandra shared her knowledge on how to help ease stress with Osteopathy.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic form of manual therapy defined as an art and a science that works primarily through the physical structure of the body facilitating innate self-regulation and healing. It works to relieve pain, improve mobility and restore health in all systems.

Imbalances may be the result of injuries, illness, stress, and/or habitual holding patterns at work, rest or exercise. Osteopaths have finite palpatory sense to feel areas of holding or restrictions within each system such as skeletal, cranial, muscular, fluidic, fascial, nervous, and visceral to be able to release the tensions holding them.

It differs from other forms of manual therapies such as chiropractic, physiotherapy and massage therapy by its comprehensive assessment and treatment as well as it’s philosophy.

Almost anybody as it aims to restore optimal function and alignment to promote well-being and functional symbiotic interrelationships between all structures of the body. Help Ease Stress

What does it do?

Even though two people may have the same symptoms they both have two distinct and different mechanisms of injury. Osteopaths acknowledge this and respect is given to each tissue structure on how it would like to be released. This respect is what is termed, “dialogue with the tissues”. An osteopath palpates, gently places their hands on the body, and feels how the tissue responds to their touch. If an area is holding and is not ready to be released the tissue will tense up.

Conversely, if it is ready to be released it becomes more relaxed and allows a deeper sense of touch. Every structure in the body has it’s most optimal position, most functional surrounding space to be mobile, pathways to receive nutrition and eliminate it’s wastes. If any one of these elements is missing, dysfunction and disease can ensue. By dialoguing with the tissues Osteopaths can determine if any one of these elements is compromised and release the tension that is present.

What else should someone new to Osteopathy know?

In our society today we take better care of our inanimate objects such as our automobiles. We know if we don’t take them in for an oil change every three months we’re going to have problems later on that would cost a lot on repairs.

We take our bodies for granted until they give us pain or don’t move the way we would like. Osteopathy can be an effective proactive and preventive form of healthcare. Regular treatments could enhance your state of health and well-being by ensuring optimal alignment and functional interrelationships between all your bodies structures. So in the event you do have unfortunate accident or medical emergency your body with be in better state to heal more effectively.
