I am a big believer in living a healthy lifestyle. Your eyes are just as important as any other part of your body, and how wonderful it is that we can see our beautiful world.
Recently, I was lucky enough to speak with Dr. Pavan Avinashi and he shared with me all the top tips that you need to keep your eye sight going great and have optimum eye health!
Dr. Pavan Avinashi, optometrist and owner of the Hollyburn Eye Clinics, obtained his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry and was recognized as the BC Association of Optometrists’ “Young Optometrist of the Year” in 2013.
- Why is eye health care important?
We only get one set of eyes. Good eyesight is an important part of overall wellness and it’s important that we do everything in our power to protect them and keep them healthy. Having your eyes regularly tested with a doctor of optometry can help identify and address problems early.
- As you get older how do your eyes change?
As we age, the lens in our eye hardens and becomes less flexible over time, hindering our ability to focus on close objects such as smartphones, computers, books and menus. This common eye condition, called presbyopia, often occurs around the age of 40 and affects close to 1.7 billion people worldwide. Presbyopia tends to worsen over time, requiring changes in prescriptions for glasses or lenses until your early 60’s.
- What are multi-focal contact lenses?
Multifocal contact lenses are designed with either two or three lens powers that gradually change for a natural transition allowing people to see close-up, middle and far distances.
- Who can use them?
Patients who have been diagnosed with presbyopia, have trouble reading fine print, or experience difficulty switching focus between near, intermediate and far distances should ask an eye care professional about multifocal contact lens and visit loseyourreaders.ca. There are some exceptional new lenses on the market that work with the eye’s natural function to provide crisp and clear vision for all distances.
Any other tips on eye health?
Get a good pair of sunglasses. Your eyes need protection for harmful UV rays all year round – and don’t forget the kids. Long-term exposure can increase your risk of developing serious eye conditions.
What options are there for people who need prescription lenses (or assistance with their sight)?
There have been many advancements in contact lens technologies. One of these advancements is Alcon Dailies Total1 contact lenses, which includes a multifocal lens option for those over 40 in need of near correction. These daily disposable lenses are made of a material that allows a lot of oxygen to pass through it, allowing our eyes to “breath” and has an envelope of water around it to ensure incredible comfort – perfect for those who like to read or watch a movie on their tablets.
