Here is my secret. For years I had this odd combination of adult acne and dry flaky skin. Feeling embarrassed about my skin, I used every type of foundation and concealer to cover up my poor complexion and would visit day spas monthly for new solutions. The spas would suggest professional skincare products and some of it helped. But I didn’t really start to see a change until I tried a new prescription and perfected my own skincare routine.
Also, for my blog I have been lucky enough to speak with several different skin care experts over the years and learn different tips and tricks to get to my best skin (and clearest skin) ever.
When I say ‘perfected’ I don’t mean that I have it all figured out (I wish!) but I have really improved my skin and feel my best everyday.

Tip # 1
Wash your make up off at the end of every day.
And I mean every day. Even the evenings when you are so tired, you wish there was a face wash fairy that would come and remove your makeup. Unfortunately, that fairy does not exist (yet) so in the meantime, I force myself up off the couch and wash my face and remove my makeup every night.
Best case scenario (and most evenings) I will also do the following steps after washing my face.
Eye Makeup Removers
Every evening, I use a soft cotton pad and gently remove my eye make up.
Tip # 2
This tip I learned from my mom (thanks mom!). Use a cotton face cloth to wash your face. A face cloth will act as an exfoliant and also control where you are washing and how much.
Tip # 3
Use a toner.
I love the way toners make my face feel fresh and remove any excess makeup or dirt from the day. They also bring your skin back to its regular pH balance balance.
Tip # 4
Everyday I drink at least 2 liters (or 8 cups) of water. I have a water bottle in the car, a jug of lemon (or lime) water in the fridge at home and when I am running around shooting videos or TV segments I always have a bottle of water with me.
Benefits of drinking water are that it keeps your skin looking fabulous, improves your workout performance, helps with brain function, increases energy levels and can help keep hunger at bay.
Water, water and more water. The big tip here is to include it as part of your daily life and in a way that you enjoy. Start with one liter or 4 cups of water per day and see where you get to. There are plenty of ways to make drinking water delicious.
Tip # 5
This is my favourite part of the skincare routine. I use a daily exfoliant and also a weekly exfoliant. The daily exfoliant is milder and I use it in the shower after I have washed my face. Put a small drop on a face cloth and gently wash over my face and neck.
After my weekly exfoliant, my skin looks like a million dollars! Love this step and so tempting to do it everyday. But I don’t. Because my skin can easily become irritated and red.
My all time favourite go to exfoliants (and I know they cost a bit more but are totally worth it!!) are La Prairie Cellular Mineral Face Exfoliator and Cellular 3 Minute Peel (my favourite – life changing – skin care items)
Tip # 6
For my morning skin care routine, I simply put water on my face cloth and wipe off any debris from the night before. I then use a toner and apply a daily moisturizer with SPF. Even on days when my only outing is to go to the grocery store or grab a coffee (many days I am in front of the computer in my pajamas all day) I will put on a daily moisturizer. This protects my skin and also keeps it moist (from drying out).
For the evenings, I use a more concentrated moisturizer. This type of moisturizer is going to be richer and have more effect on your skin than a daily moisturizer.
You might be thinking, ‘wow! those moisturizers (and skincare) are very pricey’ and yes, they are an investment. But I am sharing these because they have really made a huge difference on my skin. A total turn around.
A few tips for the pricier skin care products: purchase one item at a time (or ask for as a gift!) and slowly build up your skin care products that work for you. Second tip, you only need a very small amount. A jar of moisturizer can last me up to 10 months (or more). Third tip, look for bonus offers at your local department store – they can have gift with purchases or bonuses when you purchase a certain amount.
Last tip, you can try one item and use that. Then use products from less expensive products, or a combination, it is all about what works best for you.
These items work amazingly for me and could work for you. I only write (or chat) about products that I really love. There are different types of products and skin care out there and a perfect fit for you.
If you have any questions, tips or comments – I would love to hear from you! Let’s go on this journey together to look and feel our best.
